The Human Sexuality I Course can be taken as part of a the full program or as a stand alone to fill in the gaps of your training or update your training in Human Sexuality Core Knowledge Areas that are time sensitive and require up-to-date information and training. 


  The course covers the following topics: 

History of the Discipline of Sex Research, Theory, Education, Counseling and Therapy (CKAp)

Principles of Sexuality Research and Research Methods (CKAq)

Developmental Sexuality Across the Life Course: A Bio-Psycho-Social Perspective (CNAb)

Sexual and Reproductive Anatomy and Physiology (CNAg)*

Sexual Functioning and Behavior and Common Sexual Issues (CNAi)

Health and Medical Factors Affecting Sexuality (CNAh)*

Substance Use/Abuse and Sexuality (CNAl)*

Cybersexuality and Social Media (CNAk)*


Specific attention focuses on diverse perspectives and social justice themes such as power, privilege, the influence of patriarchy, social structures, social location, experiences and biases. 


The course includes both Synchronous and Asynchronous content and has two, two-hour synchronous classes per month.   Students should plan to complete two-three hours of asynchronous learning in between each class related to the topic.  


The learning environment is designed to be respectful and inclusive, encouraging open discussions and critical thinking about personal values and societal norms related to sexuality. Students may find the course to be informative and empowering, helping them develop a greater understanding of themselves and others in relation to sexuality.

and training according to AASECT requirements for certification


Core Knowledge Areas are outlined by the AASECT guidelines for Sex Therapy Certification and are adhered to in this curriculum.   Participating in this course is not a guarantee of completing the certification process. 


Human Sexuality II

The Human Sexuality II course builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in Human Sexuality I and includes the following topics; 

  • Professional Skills and Ethics: The Core Knowledge Area of Professional Communication and Personal Reflection Skills (CNAo) allows the student to gain important professional skills.  Two synchronous classes is dedicated to Ethics and Ethical Behavior (CNAa).
  • Cultural Competency and Diverse Perspectives:  The course explores SocioCultural and Familial factors (such as Race, Religion, Spirituality, Ethnicity, Culture, Socioeconomic Status, and Family Values) that impact sexual values and behaviors (CNAc) as well as issues related to the Gender, Sexual, Erotic, and Relationally Diverse (GSERD)(CNAd)(CNAf).
  • Pleasure Enhancement and Intimacy Skills:  Students learn about Intimacy Skills (e.g., social, emotional, sexual), Intimate Relationships, Interpersonal Relationships and Family Dynamics (CNAe) and Pleasure Enhancement Skills (CNAm). 
  • Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse:  Topics such as Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, and Sextortion (CNAJ)
  • Sexual Functioning and Behavior and Common Sexual Issues:  This course continues to cover the range of sexual functioning, from optimal to problematic, which includes sexual functioning and dysfunction and desire and arousal issues and sexual pain (CNAi) and build upon what was already covered in Human Sexuality I. 
  • Learning Theory and its Application:  Understanding how people acquire, process, and retain information is an essential knowledge area when working with clients.  The Core Knowledge Area Learning Theory and its Application (CNAn)  covers how clients learn and retain information.  


Human Sexuality II offers a more in-depth and critical examination of human sexuality, encouraging students to think analytically about complex issues and diverse perspectives.


The course includes both Synchronous and Asynchronous content and has two, two-hour synchronous classes per month.   Students should plan to complete two-three hours of asynchronous learning in between each class related to the topic.

Advanced sex therapy

An advanced sex therapy course is designed for professionals who have already completed foundational training in human sexuality and sex therapy. It aims to deepen their clinical skills and knowledge, preparing them to handle more complex and challenging sexual issues in therapy.   This course can be taken as part of the full program or as a stand alone course to complete the 30 Synchronous Hours required for AASECT Sex Therapy Certification that can  be completed through a comprehensive sex therapy program.


Here's what you can expect:

  • Advanced Clinical Skills: The course  focuses on teaching and practicing  assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning skills.  Courses focusing on Theory and Sex Related Psychotherapy (STa), Assessment and Diagnosis of Psychosexual Disorders (STb), and Medical Intervention in Evaluation and Treatment of Psychosexual Disorders (STd)*. 
  • Relationship and Intimacy Therapy: Specific training in Couples and Relationship Therapy (STc)* with a focus on empirically-validated models.  Diverse populations is a focus as well as how social justice themes impact relationships.  
  • Professional Skills and Ethics:  Ethical Decision Making and Best Practices (STf) include topics such as secret keeping in sex therapy, erotic transference and counter transference, the ethics of touch in sex therapy, whorephobia and body-based practitioners in sex therapy, ethical care of fat clients, and sex and technology.   Principles of Consultation, Collaboration, and Referral (STe) discusses the marginalization of sex therapist in the field of sex therapy and building a community of colleagues.
  • Focus on Developing Practical Skills:  This course is a mix of theory and practical application.  Course methods include videos of theory and clinical skills, role play and experiential activities, lectures, group discussions, small group activities, and multiple forms of media to accommodate diverse learning styles.  

The Advanced Sex Therapy course is a rigorous and transformative experience aimed at producing highly competent and ethical practitioners in the field of sex therapy. It requires a commitment to ongoing learning, self-reflection, and the development of specialized clinical expertise.
